Bought this last year from Craig's Power Equipment in Colorado Springs and the first couple of runs were like driving a box of rocks. Turns out there was a rework that needed to be done. Craigs Power Equipment in Colorado Springs picked the unit up from my house, did the rework and dropped it back off at my house, great company to work with. Love it, drives just like a skidsteer and munches through 2' of snow like butter!!!! Oh and yes the 70' throw is awesome!!!!
I gave this snow thrower a rating of one with a recommendation not to buy this. Toro had me take this machine to L.L. Johnson for repairs. L.L. Johnson mechanic, Terry, put in all the parts Toro sent in their kit. This weekend Denver got the 4th largest snow fall since the 1800's. This machine cleared over 2 feet of snow off of 18 neighbors front walks, 4 driveways and 4 front door walks. I have spent 8 hours clearing snow and this machine did not miss a beat. Minor problems with the finger steering controls, machine drifts to the right. Slush plugged the snow chute 3 times, but a quick flick of the attached stick, brought it back to full working conditions. My neighbors love the machine as I do. I will rate it a four only because of the minor problems and sluggish plugging, but it works better than any other machine I have owned or operated.
I bought this snow blower in early January and have used it 3 times for a little over 3 hours. Other than having to adjust the auger cable I've had no issues with it. The throw amount slowed down a bit on me but I sprayed a generous amount of cooking oil on the augers and throw chute and took about 3/4 of the width of the scraper and I was good to go.
I bought this machine a month already and after two use it stop moving forward. It could only move back as the problem mentioned here. So I had to finish removing the snow with my shovel. The other problem that I noticed is the joystick which directs the snow is difficult to maintain remains in the chosen position and if the company as move the joystick position more forward, so as not to bend the wrist when you pull it towards you, I do not understand why the company did not install the lock (blue plastic part) on the front of the handle rather than on top handle.
I purchased this 28" tracked two stage snow blowing monster (model 1428) a few weeks ago and have already put it to the test with two large snow falls so far this November. I wanted to share my experience with Toro and with the buying public. I'll work thru some of the issues and continue to use the machine and will post another review when winter is over.
I live on an acreage in British Columbia Canada. I have a 450 ft paved road with some slope to it and a large concrete driveway. We get big dumps of wet snow. I also use my side x side with a plow to clear our road. I am a Toro fan and chose this machine over the tracked Honda and Husqvarna. I have a Toro lawn mower and single stage snow thrower ( Power Clear 621). They have been excellent products and I have not had a single issue with them.
I had to travel to the next town to find a Toro Dealer and this machine. Enderby Rentals was very good to deal with.
I've recently retired from a long automotive career...I know machines pretty well. The new snow blower is an impressive piece of equipment. Its big. Its powerful. It looks well made and has good quality components...as it should. I needed a very capable machine to handle my conditions, so I wanted the best.
The machine starts easily (electric start or pull) and the motor runs very well. It throws heavy snow a long distance. I am sure this will be a very good machine but I have had some minor issues that I have repaired myself or am in the process of correcting...
1 - While giving the machine its first service (oil change, adjust cables, adjust tracks) I noticed the "Front Brace" under the machine was not connected to one side. It stabilizes the front of the track system. One mounting bolt was gone and the other was loose. It allowed the tracks to go out of alignment. The bolts (no nuts) that Toro used to mount the ends of the brace to the track support don't match the parts illustration that shows nuts with bolts. I straightened the brace and reinstalled it with stronger nuts, bolts, lock washers, and a drop of thread lock. I hope the out of alignment operation didn't damage anything like axles, bushings, etc...
2 - The hydrostatic transmission is a fabulous feature but I am having two issues. The first issue I noticed is a sharp quick on and off "snap" pull to the right that happens while under load (going up hill). The right "brake" cable has slack and is not incorrectly activating the power steering feature. It works fine when I pull the lever. I don't see a way for me to correct this myself. I'll have the dealer fix this at a later date. The second issue is that the transmission loses drive (slips) while going up a slope. I have tightened the drive lever cable a lot but it still slips and an inspection of the belt shows a lot of slack...a lot. I will keep tightening and will have to shorted the cable soon.
3 - The tilt feature is very handy but the Height Adjustment Bracket was not bolted to the machine's frame (at the top). I showed the missing bolt to the dealer when I picked up the machine but they thought this was normal, but the parts illustrations show a bolt. I found a bolt that fit perfectly and have fixed this myself. The tilt feature works much better with this bolt in place.
Sorry for the long review, but this looks like the first review of this model and I really want this machine to succeed. The fundamentals are all in place and once some of these issues are corrected I am sure it will be. I will post a review at the end of the season about its performance and the repairs along the way...Here are two pictures...
The machine eats snow like a teenager eats food. With the full speed control hydrostatic drive it’s easy to keep the auger box full and the impeller empties it as fast as it enters. The track drive does not bog down and keeps turning under all conditions. The chute control for me took some patience to begin with. Use your gloves not you choppers for turning with the track breaking for steering, the hand warmers are great. Starting is simple and effective, I like the electric start, but it still starts well with the recoil.
I bought this bad boy new on January 3rd 2023 for here in North Dakota and we had a record matched season of snow fall at 101 inches and this beast helped me get through it! My next added blower will be the 30 inch TRX to help take some of the work load off the 28 inch. Worth every penny and paid for itself 6x over in the first month alone.
